Five years after selling her groundbreaking media company in a massive $900 million deal, Reese Witherspoon is taking back the reins.
Witherspoon has officially partnered with French entertainment studio Mediawan to buy back a majority stake in Hello Sunshine from Candle Media. The move marks a significant new chapter for the production company responsible for massive, female-driven hits like Big Little Lies, The Morning Show, and Little Fires Everywhere.
A Return to the Creator-First Vision
Witherspoon announced the exciting business move on her Instagram Stories, sharing her enthusiasm for the future of the company she founded in 2016.
“I’m so proud of what our incredible team has built, and I’m looking forward to continuing what we started: putting creators first and telling stories that matter,” the actress and producer shared.
She further described the acquisition as a "homecoming," emphasizing that championing creators has always been her core vision for Hello Sunshine. "The best is still ahead," she noted, echoing the original mission of the company to change the way women are represented in media.
Following the acquisition, Hello Sunshine co-founder Seth Rodsky will join the company's board alongside Witherspoon and representatives from Mediawan.
The Mediawan Partnership
The partnership with Mediawan places Hello Sunshine in excellent company. The independent European studio has an extraordinary track record and recently acquired Brad Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment. Mediawan's expansive portfolio includes involvement in major films like The Greatest Showman and the upcoming F1, as well as hit television series such as Slow Horses, Call My Agent!, and Love Is Blind.
Mediawan CEO Pierre-Antoine Capton praised the acquisition, calling Witherspoon a “generational talent.” He noted that Hello Sunshine has an extraordinary track record of telling premium stories and forming strong, genuine connections with audiences—especially through the wildly successful Reese’s Book Club.
When Witherspoon initially sold the company to the private equity-backed Candle Media in 2021, she stated her commitment to empowering women and spotlighting their incredible creations. By taking back control alongside Mediawan, it is clear she is doubling down on that very mission.
